Wise Choice Home Care is a Black woman-owned company based in West Baltimore that provides non-medical healthcare services to individuals in their home. During her twenty-year career as a Baltimore County paramedic and firefighter, owner Bianca Wise helped countless seniors who did not have access to critical medical and non-medical services at their homes. They confided in her that they valued their independence too much to live in a facility or that they were afraid of what might happen to them in a facility. This led to them trying to struggle through difficulties at home because they were terrified to call 911 or otherwise ask for help in case they were deemed too vulnerable to continue living in their homes. Bianca sympathized with these individuals and decided to do something about it. She retired from her career in public services, where she had achieved becoming the first Black woman in the department’s 180-year history to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and met with the management of the Home Helpers Home Care franchise in Cincinnati. Bianca knew that she could continue serving those in need by purchasing a franchise location, which she used her savings to do in August 2018.
While working through the certification process, Bianca conducted outreach at nursing homes, care facilities, physician offices, and emergency departments. A year after purchasing the franchise location, she began providing surgery companion care. The franchise’s client base grew steadily from there, ultimately growing by 700% during its first year of operation despite the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2020, the franchise assisted eleven regular clients through sixteen employees. Its extensive service include meal planning and preparation, housekeeping, transportation, correspondence, paying bills, and other necessities Funding from BCL allowed Wise Choice Home Care to continue its tremendous growth by hiring an administrator, leasing office space, and engaging in marketing.
