The deadline to apply for the Root to Success Contest, which will culminate in six small businesses receiving twelve months of free rent in the Waverly Business District, has been extended to August 28, 2023. The contest was first announced by Barrus Real Estate Group (Barrus), a social impact-driven real estate developer based in Baltimore City, in a press release on March 29, 2023.
Baltimore Community Lending, Maryland Small Business Development Center, Neighborhood Design Center, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Services, and Himmelrick PR have partnered with Barrus to design and implement the contest. The contest was initiated by Barrus as part of its “Growing Greenmount” program to reactivate the Waverly Business District, which has been disinvested over decades, and to provide opportunities for Baltimore-based microbusinesses.
Selected finalists will benefit from a training series designed to encouraged business growth. Baltimore Community Lending will conduct workshops focused on how microbusinesses can access capital and how to prepare the required application documents. Applicants will also have the opportunity to participate in Baltimore Community Lending’s small business lending program, in which new and emerging small businesses receive free business training as part of the loan application process.
“Baltimore Community Lending is happy to partner with Barrus Real Estate Group. Through their own ingenuity and the synergy between the Growing Greenmount partners, an amazing opportunity exists in Waverly for six fortunate small businesses. BCL is excited to help make it happen,” said Bonnie Crockett, VP & Director of Baltimore Community Lending’s Small Business Lending Division.
