Baltimore Community Lending (BCL) stands proudly at the intersection of history and progress, where the past meets the future. Our headquarters, nestled in the heart of downtown Baltimore, occupies the very grounds where Maryland’s first Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Bowie State University, was founded in 1865. This site, once the location of the African Baptist Church in the Crane’s Building, has witnessed the birth of an institution dedicated to educational equity and excellence.
On October 10, 2025, in a poignant ceremony, a commemorative street sign was unveiled at the corner of Calvert and Saratoga Streets, officially renaming the area as Bowie State University Way. This gesture not only honors the university’s 160-year legacy but also reaffirms its enduring commitment to innovation and progress.
At the ceremony, President Aminta H. Breaux was joined by Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott, who reflected on Bowie State’s enduring role in advancing educational equity, student success, and workforce development across the Maryland region and beyond. Dr. Breaux remarked, “This historic recognition honors our 160-year legacy of access and excellence while symbolizing the university’s enduring commitment to innovation and progress.” (bowiestate.edu)
